What it’s really like inside a fast-growing startup vs. a large company

Went from a 10,000-person company to a 40-person startup and back again. Startup: faster decisions, more ownership, less structure to lean on when things get chaotic. Big company: more support and process, but slower to actually ship anything. Neither is objectively better — depends what you need right now. What’s your experience been?

Adding a remote-first data point: the ownership/structure trade-off you describe held true for us too, but the lack of structure was much less painful once we hired a couple of senior ICs who'd done it before.
